Enrollment in the Cody School District is down this fall after an increase last year.

The district has 2,162 students, down 21 from last fall.

“Most (of the decrease) is at the elementary level but we're not exactly sure why,” Superintendent Bryan Monteith said.

The drop was actually greater but some students moved in after the school year started.

“We've picked up more since school started,” he said. “We even had some move in Sept. 13. Whether or not that will bring the numbers in line with last year is hard to say.”

Last year the district saw an increase in enrollment with 2,183 students, up from 2,177 in 2005.

Kindergarten figures are up 13 from last year, prompting the district to hire an additional kindergarten teacher at Sunset.

“Kindergarten has had slow growth and hopefully that will become a trend,” Monteith said. “Our goal is to keep classes as small as possible with 16 students to one teacher.”

Eastside has 323 students, Sunset 280, Livingston 294, Wapiti 27 and Valley 5, for 929 total elementary students.

Monteith said most of the loss occurred at Eastside, after several families moved. On average about 30 percent of students in grades K-8 come and go throughout the year.

The middle school has 490 students and the high school 743. Both are “solid” compared to 2006, he said. Fewer students leave as they get older due to high school graduation requirements.

Monteith said he expects the numbers to fall by the end of the year, as is the national trend in schools. In some past years district numbers have grown slightly by the end of the school year.

During the 2005-06 school year the population stood at 2,189 at the end of the year, up 12 from the start. At one point it was as high as 2,193.

In May 2007 there were 2,181 students, down 2 from the start of the year. In the elementary schools, Eastside had 352 students, Sunset 295, Livingston 294, Wapiti 24 and Valley 5, for 970 total students. Numbers are down 41 this fall.

The middle school ended with 480 students and the high school had 731. Both increased slightly with the start of school.
